Shawl Weaving Artisan - Power Looms and Handlooms

       Types of handlooms

Objectives: At the end of this lesson you shall be able to
       • explain parts of handloom and their functions
       • list types of handlooms.

Vertical wires or cords that hold and control individual warp threads,

A frame with closely spaced vertical slats that helps push the newly

A tool that carries the weft yarn across the warp threads through the shed.
3 Shuttle Traditional shuttles are boat-shaped and have a bobbin inside holding the

A large roller at the back of the loom that holds the warp threads. It releases

them gradually as weaving progresses to maintain tension
A roller or bar at the back of the loom that helps maintain tension in the

A roller at the front of the loom that guides the woven fabric toward the

A spindle or bobbin that holds the weft yarn inside the shuttle. It is designed
7 Pirn to unwind smoothly as the shuttle moves across the loom, allowing for
                                           continuous and efficient weaving

A mechanism that helps the shuttle carrying the weft thread through the

shed across the loom. It is typically used in fly-shuttle looms.
A device that keeps the fabric stretched to maintain its width during

A rectangular frame that holds a set of heddles. When raised or lowered,
